Where does Shea Butter come from?
Shea Butter (butyrspermum parkii) is a natural oil that has been used for centuries for soft, beautiful, healthy skin. Shea butter comes from the fruit of Karite trees (also called Shea trees), which grow wild across West Africa. These trees require little cultivation, yet a single Karite tree will produce abundant fruit for up to 200 years, making it a valuable sustainable natural resource for the rur
al African villages.
Shea Butter oil is made by hand, through a process of drying, roasting, and crushing the nuts that are found inside the Karite fruit. Villagers gather the ripe fruit after it falls from the trees, boil it and spread the shea nuts out in the sun to dry. The nuts are then roasted and crushed to extract the rich, healing oil.
The Shea Butter we use in our creams is purchased from small independent co-ops in Africa, ensuring both a high-quality organic shea butter and a fair trade price for the African women and their families who have worked hard to produce it.
